i have kept two letters, the prologue & the epilogue of this moment of my life. The first is the invitation; the second says:
lord byron affirmed that in the course of his life he had only known three hours of happiness. i have had many more: i am happier than he was. i savoured them consciously and lost nothing of them. i understood that the hours you were giving me would destroy in a few moments all those-- and they were not many-- that i had known before. but i felt that is was better so; and for you i ask only the greatest happiness of all, which is the pursuit of your ideal.
